Re: question about the weather, anyone?
"kayle" wrote I must admit when it does come out it does appear to me to be more powerful than usual, but perhaps it may simply be that we haven't seen much of it this summer.

Re: question about the weather, anyone?
In message , kayle writes More intense in what way? It's no warmer. And I've gone the usual dead-leaf colour after a few days out in it. We certainly aren't seeing more of it, we're having a very British summer at the moment!

Strawberries Over Winter
Hello I have some strawberries in hanging baskets. I'd be grateful for some advice as to what to do with them over winter. Do I bring the baskets inside (if so, do they need to be somewhere light, or can I just stick them in the garage? Do they need watering or can I just leave them until the

Euphorbia Problem
I have a Variagated Euphorbia that is about 4 years old. It's about 3ft high and not a rampant grower. Lately, it has stopped producing new shoots from the base and I'm afraid I'm going to lose it. What can I do to encourage new growth, if anything? Many thanks

Re: Cornish palm roots?
"Aitch" wrote ... We have a couple of these one about 20ft tall and the other a bit shorter. It won't be the roots that give you a problem as they seem to go straight down to their native land (NZ) but more the ever increasing size of the crown as it matures. Cornish palm roots?
I have planted a Cornish palm 1 metre from the house, the plant is currently 5 feet tall. From examining pictures of mature specimens on the web, I realise that mine has a long way to go. Do I need to move it further from the house while I still can, as I don't want to encounter problems with the roots at a later stage.

Re: Anti Slug and Snail Experiment

Re: Anti Slug and Snail Experiment
They sell rolls of copper in the gardening section of most home improvement stores. It works great. Copper is getting so expensive though! I'm thinking of finding a way to use pennies instead. You can also use some lemon to clean your copper.

Crop Rotation.. Confused!
I have just taken over an allotment and am in the process of clearing all (well most?) of the nasty weeds etc by the end of the summer. I plan to divide the allotment into 6 parts. One part is for permanent crops like fruit and the remaining five would rotate in the following order: Legumes, followed by

Re: Anti Slug and Snail Experiment
Many years ago (about 30+) I read about copper deflecting the onslaught of slugs. It so happened soon after reading this tidbit of information I spotted a box of copper tape on the counter of my company 'store' while I was getting spare fuses for my truck. I asked the fellow what it was for. He had no idea nor who ordered it. We paved roads. He said if I wanted it I

Re: Organic slug pellets
That expensive box usually lasts me 2 years. Not sure, but iron phosphate _might_ be sold as a dietary supplement. Check around -- the cheapest brand might do the trick for you.

Re: Organic slug pellets
In article <1210444932.221...@bubbleator. drizzle.com>, Just drives me batty that a cheap chemical has such a premium. I've been to drug stores and chemical providers to no avail. I've helped create MSDS docs in the past dealing with Titanium Dioxide. You may be able to purchase a lot of sluggo for $600 but each year I'd

Sluggo and others consist of 1% iron phosphate and 99 % breads or a starch. Active ingredient 1% for expensive box . Bill who would dissolve iron phosphate in soda.

Re: Organic slug pellets
Well if they don't want to go over, we hope that they won't want to go under either. BUT, early days of the experiment. WATCH THIS SPACE. If it works :-)) If it doesn't work? Well at least I have, as always, been honest :-)) Mike

Re: Organic slug pellets
Iron phosphate (i.e. "Sluggo" brand) works great, and adds a shot of phosphorous, which your plants need anyway. Does the wire stapled to the top of the rails do anything about the slugs nesting underneath?

Re: Anti Slug and Snail Experiment
Yes. That is one we found inside, so it was lifted up and placed alongside the copper cable. It wasn't happy ;-( The cable on that bed only went on a couple of days ago so we can only assume it was already in the bed. Follow this thread :-)) Watch this space :-)) Mike

Manure, compost. Whats the difference?
Hey expert gardeners!! I just taken on new allotment which, as expected, is pretty overgrown with bindweed n couch grass n stuff I don't recognise. So, I started double digging the whole plot to remove as much as possible of all of these deep rooted perennial nasties.. It will take me until end of August to complete this.
